Unbeaten middleweight Jermall Charlo denied any knowledge of an agreement to fight Canelo Alvarez.
The WBC champion ended 29 months of inactivity when he returned to Las Vegas to secure a decision win against Jose Benavidez Jr., and he had been linked with a clash with Canelo before and since his brother Jermell came up in weight to lose to the Mexican last year.
The win was a convincing one for Canelo who had struggled with a hand injury in recent years, and there is speculation he will confirm Jermall as his opponent for his traditional Cinco de Mayo outing.
However, he denied any knowing the fight would go ahead.
“I haven’t even talked to Al Haymon since I last fought,” he said on Instagram, reporting BoxingScene.com . “Everyone is like ‘You about to fight Canelo’… ain’t no confirmation. I’m in the islands somewhere.
“Until it’s official, it’s official. I offered. I said I would do whatever I gotta do. We was on the jet skis, I stopped for this.”
