Australian boxer George Kambosos Jr. is aiming to fight Teofimo Lopez Jr. after seeing off Lee Selby.
Kambosos defeated Selby on Saturday evening on a split-decision scoring verdict, with two cards in his favour going 118-110 and 116-112. Selby took one card at 115-114, with some observers suggesting that was a generous score for the Brit.
The match was a decider for the right to challenge the current IBF lightweight champion, which is Lopez after his upset win over Vasiliy Lomachenko a fortnight ago.
Speaking after the fight, Kambosos said "I can't get this smile off my face."
"It hasn't sunk in yet. I dug deep and I won a lot of them rounds. The big shots landed and I thought he was hurt a few times. That's a former world champion. The guy is still a very respected fighter. It was a great win. That's two former world champions in their backyards.”
Explaining his pride after his win, The 27-year-old IBF Pan Pacific lightweight champion explained that the victory had given him credibility against a difficult opponent.
"I knew the job I would do. I'm a confident fighter and I back my ability,” he said.
“I thought I hurt him a few times and I thought he nearly went. He's an experienced guy and he beat Ricky Burns in his last fight. I'm the young hungry guy coming up. That was a great win. That's another 12 rounds in my bank.
“The body shots busted him up. The right hand to the body, the stiff jab to the body. I was very composed. I feel like I'm in my prime. There's so much more work to do.”
As he continued to look to the future, he claimed that in his sights was a fight with Lopez and his belts.
“I'm coming for the unified lightweight world title against Teofimo Lopez. Two young hungry fighters!"
