Leigh Wood's first world title defence could come against the man he won the belt from.

Leigh Wood has no problem facing Can Xu for a second time if the Chinese fighter opts to take advantage of his rematch clause. Xu was comprehensively outboxed by Wood last weekend before he was stopped in the final session in one of 2021s biggest boxing upsets.

Wood was full of belief in the build-up and it became obvious why once the first bell sounded last Saturday night at Fight Camp. Wood was dominant throughout but before he plots on with his next career move, he must wait to see if Xu wants to do it all over again.

“No problem,” said Wood to BoxingScene on the prospect of facing Xu again. “I had six weeks’ notice for this fight. With a 12-week camp, let’s do it again.” If a rematch doesn’t materialise then Wood won’t be short of options with Josh Warrington, Leigh Wood and Kid Galahad providing attractive alternatives.
