Liam Davies wants to fight for a super bantamweight world title but appreciates he may not get his chance in the short term.

Davies claimed the WBO International belt from Jason Cunningham in Telford on Saturday night, needing just 156 seconds to bring the fight to a first-round close.

Davies defended his British, European and WBC International belts in the process, and at other periods that might have made him a potential challenger to one of the outright champions at 122lbs, but he understands things are currently different.

Naoya Inoue defeated Stephen Fulton last week to become one of the two unified champions at the weight, the other being Marlon Tapales.

For now it appears as if Inoue and Tapales are on a collision course towards the end of the year in order to decide who is undisputed, and that leaves Davies looking for other options.

He named 22-year-old Briton Dennis McCann, the Commonwealth champion, as an option.

From inside the ring after the fight, Davies said: “I feel like I’ve got better as time has gone on. I’ve dedicated my life to boxing, giving it everything and now I’m reaping the rewards. But for me this isn’t enough, I want more, I want to bring a world title back to Telford.

“I know a world title fight is difficult at the minute but I’ll keep ticking over and now maybe I’ll fight Dennis McCann next if it’s there.

“People could say I’m not ready yet and I could understand that but I just want to prove that I’m ready. I want someone in the top five. My improvement is not questionable."
