Manny Pacquiao's imminent battle with Errol Spence could be a unification encounter.

Manny Pacquiao has participated in some gruelling encounters to become world champion during his career, but it looks he could be handed the WBA welterweight crown with the minimum of fuss.

The highly-decorated Filipino acquired the title back in 2019 when defeating Keith Thurman via split decision in a thrilling encounter, but that battle remains his last fight to date. Due to his inactivity, Pacquiao was made “Champion in Recess” with Yordenis Ugas being promoted to champion.

With Pacquiao now set to face WBC and IBF ruler, Errol Spence, on August 21st, the bout could be elevated to a unification contest following Gilberto Mendoza’s interview with ThaBoxingVoice.

“Initially, the plan was for Ugas to fight Pacquiao,” said the WBA President in a recent interview. “But now, the Spence fight was announced.

“Sean Gibbons, who represents Manny, they’ve written a letter to be placed back in [as WBA champion]. We’re working on it. There’s a high probability. It has to be run through a championship committee and voted before being taken to the president.”
