Eddie Hearn confirmed before Leigh Wood’s rematch clause with Mauricio Lara before Saturday’s fight, but the Mexican could now chase a trilogy rematch with Josh Warrington
That could open up a path for the new WBA featherweight champion to take on Warrington this summer to defend his title, with Wood given the option to fight the winner of that match-up.
Speaking after the fight, Wood said to DAZN: "Congratulations to Mauricio Lara, he's great fighter," Wood told DAZN. "I made a mistake and paid for it."
Hearn also said after the fight that Wood plans to activate the rematch clause in the pre-fight contract, but credited the Briton for taking on such a tough voluntary defence.
"Firstly, well done to Leigh Wood for taking a fight like this - everyone knows how dangerous Mauricio Lara is," Hearn said.
"I thought Leigh was cruising in that fight, won four rounds on the spin, but Mauricio Lara came with a left hook from the heavens."
Lara meanwhile said that he wanted a third fight with Warington, which perhaps comes as no surprise.
After his win on Saturday night, Warrington claimed that Lara had spat on him, and then launched an explicit invective, saying he too would be open to another fight after their second ended in an early draw.
Lara admitted that he had spat at his rival, claiming the bitter rival endures, and also said: "Of course I would like that trilogy.
"I want as many belts as possible, but it's up to Eddie Hearn to make that decision."
