Michael Conlan sensationally stopped by Luis Alberto Lopez as world title hopes end in BelfastDAZN

Luis Alberto Lopez ruined the world title dreams of Michael Conlan in front of a stunned Belfast audience as he stopped the local favourite in the fifth round.  

This was Conlan’s second attempt at winning the sport’s biggest prize, but his chance of glory was stolen thanks to the aggressive approach of the Mexican who retained his IBF featherweight bely with a brilliant right hand. 

Conlan began the fight well with a bust start but there were some early signs that it could go Lopez’s way as found Conlan’s target in the opening sessions.  

Lopez managed to hurt Conlan in the third stanza, but Conlan’s recovery skills were impressive as he finished the round strong roared on his by his adoring public. 

In round number five, Lopez’s reckless style was working well for him, and he was constantly able to get Conlan to trade with him.  

During one exchange, Lopez picked his moment and Conlan immediately hit the floor before the towel of Afam Booth entered the ring to signal the end of a heartbreaking night for Conlan.
