British super lightweight Ohara Davies was riding the crest of a wave going into Saturday's fight against Ismael Barroso on the undercard of Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Fredrick Lawson.
After losing to Jack Catterall in 2018, Davies had put together an impressive seven fight winning streak with some expecting him to challenge for world honours in the future.
This clash with Barroso could have been the gateway to that opportunity if Davies got the win, but it was the veteran who triumphed with a shock first round knockout.
Davies was reckless in the opening stages and Barroso stunned him with left hand before dropping his British opponent with a number of punches.
Despite rising to his feet, Barroso knocked down Davies for a second time which resulted in the referee Celestino Ruiz bringing the fight to an early end.
Now Davies has posted a video on X reacting to the loss and was quick to take the blame for the performance.
"I just wanted to say that I’m sorry for the people that had faith in me, all of the fans, the people that didn’t go to bed because they wanted to stay up and watch me become champion," Davies said.
"That’s a fight I had a chance of winning, I’d done the camp right, everyone had done their job correctly.
"I made a mistake and I paid for it, I threw a good shot, I tried to rush in and ended up getting caught."
