Have we seen the end of a current world champion's career?

Shakur Stevenson has stunned the world of boxing by announcing his retirement from the sport on X at the age of 26.

The Newark fighter, who won silver at the 2016 Olympics, is a three-weight world champion and he’s climbed to the top of his profession in an effortless manner becoming one of the game’s best fighters.

Last November, when winning the WBC lightweight title, Stevenson was criticised by many for his passive display against Edwin De Los Santos.

Despite the negative reaction, Stevenson was still victorious, and the result was intended to be a platform that would push him into bigger fights this year.

Operating at 135lbs, Stevenson is close in weight to a number of high-profile competitors, and you could identify several big money fights for him over the next few years.

Contests against the likes of Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia were potential options, but they appear off limits now with Stevenson sensationally walking away from the sport.
