Oscar De La Hoya is aiming high with his upcoming comeback.

Weeks after claiming he wanted to rematch Floyd Mayweather Jr. after "a couple of fights back", returning boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya has also identified current pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez as a future opponent.

Returning in an exhibition bout against former UFC star, Vitor Belfort, in September, De La Hoya has made it clear that he intends to challenge the biggest name available once the Belfort event is done with.

Since his initial retirement, De La Hoya has been one of boxing’s biggest promoters, staging huge fights featuring some of the sport’s most marquee profiles.

Once in charge of guiding Canelo’s career, De La Hoya is now targeting the current super-middleweight champion as a potential foe.

“You inspired me Mike,” said De La Hoya to Mike Tyson on the HotBoxin podcast. “Looking as good as you did against Roy, just for coming back you inspired me. So, I said, ‘I wanna do it too.’

“I wanna do two of these fights and then, guess what? I wanna do a real fight, a 12-round fight with either Floyd or Canelo.”

An Olympic gold medallist and six division world champion, De La Hoya enjoyed a stellar career that saw him share the ring with some of boxing’s biggest names including Julio Cesar Chavez, Felix Trinidad, and of course Mayweather.

He walked away from the sport following a loss to Manny Pacquiao in December 2008.
