Vergil Ortiz will return to action on January 6 when he faces Fredrick Lawson following an inactivity period lasting 17 months.
The unbeaten Texan is eager to prove himself as one of the world’s best fighters and he aims to make up for last time in 2024 by starting with an impressive victory over Lawson.
Fighting at super-welterweight following a successful spell at 147lbs, Ortiz, 19-0 (19), will target world titles if successful against Lawson and his promoter is backing him to perform at the highest level.
Oscar De La Hoya has promoted multiple world champions and he’s heaped plenty of praise on Ortiz ahead of his next bout.
“He will fight anybody. He will challenge the very best and that’s why we love promoting him,” said De La Hoya when speaking to BoxingScene at the Ortiz vs. Lawson press conference.
“That’s why we love being on his team. He is a fighter who is willing to just put it all out there and challenge the toughest out there.”
