Oscar De La Hoya believes an all-Mexican showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia is inevitable.
Canelo, once promoted by De La Hoya, returned to the ring earlier this month when he retained his undisputed super-middleweight title with a dominant victory over Britain’s John Ryder.
The immediate aftermath saw Canelo set out his intentions for the future and that includes a second meeting with Dmitry Bivol, who beat Canelo last year.
Munguia faces Sergiy Derevyanchenko on June 10, and his promoter his insistent that a fight against his fellow countryman is a contest that should happen.
“I strongly feel that Alvarez vs Munguia, an all-Mexican showdown, is inevitable,” said De La Hoya when speaking to BoxingScene.
“Boxing hasn't had two Mexican warriors collide in recent times. Alvarez vs Munguia has to happen in the near future in order to keep Mexican boxing alive and thriving and bigger than ever.
“We have to show the fans that Mexican boxing is the very best. Canelo and Jaime, in the near future, I believe can happen.”
