Oscar De La Hoya on Vergil Ortiz Jr's injury: 'His liver was shutting down, there's nothing we can do'DAZN
Golden Boy boss Oscar De La Hoya gave an update on Vergil Ortiz Jr's injury on The DAZN Boxing Show.

The signs are looking positive for Vergil Ortiz Jr as he begins his recovery from rhabdomyolysis.

The rising welterweight star was set to face Michael McKinson this coming weekend live on DAZN, but the fight was then cancelled after Ortiz was diagnosed with the injury at the start of fight week.

Speaking exclusively to The DAZN Boxing Show, his promoter Oscar De La Hoya had a positive update on the 23-year-old's recovery.

"He’s doing much better, I spoke to him a few minutes ago and he’s doing a lot better," De La Hoya said.

"It’s unfortunate what happened, look health is first and you just never know in this sport."

"He’s a hard worker, he’s probably one of the hardest workers in boxing today."

The former six-weight world champion then went onto discuss Ortiz's injury in more detail which was affecting even the simplest of tasks.

"It’s unfortunate, but he did the right thing, his father did the right thing, and look his liver was shutting down, there’s nothing we can do.

"How can we force a fighter to go inside the ring when your liver is shutting down, it’s impossible.

"No wonder he was getting fatigued in training, he was not feeling good, he was getting tired just by walking in the mornings so he did the right thing."

Instead of cancelling the show, Golden Boy's March 19th card will now see Alexis Rocha take on Blair Cobbs in a welterweight contest. McKinson is also in action against replacement opponent Alex Martin, both fights can be seen live on DAZN
