He is widely regarded as one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters of all time—a champion in eight different weight divisions.

In 2021 DAZN ranked him at number one on a list of top 10 fighters from the last 30 years. We are talking about the legendary Manny Pacquiao, born on this day, December 17, in 1978 in Kibawe, Philippines.

As we wish him the happiest of birthdays, DAZN News reflects on his incredible journey, his achievements, and where he is today.

The early days

Manny Pacquiao grew up in poverty in the Philippines and began boxing as a teenager to help support his family.

At the age of 14 he was living on the streets in Manilla and working in construction.

He took up boxing around this time and his raw talent quickly caught attention, and at just 16 years old, in 1995, he made his professional debut.

Despite early struggles, his determination and work ethic set the foundation for an illustrious career.

A record-breaking career

Pacquiao’s achievements are unrivalled: he is the only boxer in history to win world titles in eight weight divisions, ranging from flyweight to super welterweight.

Some of his most memorable fights include victories over Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton, and Juan Manuel Marquez.

His rivalry with Marquez, spanning four fights, is one of boxing’s greatest sagas.

On top of all his achievements Pacquiao was also the first, and to date only fighter to win world championship titles across four decades (1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s).

Political career

Outside the ring, Pacquiao transitioned into politics. He served as a congressman and later as a Senator in the Philippines, using his platform to advocate for poverty reduction and social reform.

In 2022, Pacquiao ran for President of the Philippines and although he didn’t win – he finished a distant third behind Ferdinand Marcos Jnr with roughly four million votes - he has made both his political ambitions and his dedication to serving his country very clear.

Manny the philanthropist

Pacquiao is known for his generosity. Through the Manny Pacquiao Foundation, he has built schools, hospitals, and homes for underprivileged communities in the Philippines.

He has also funded scholarships and disaster relief efforts, cementing his legacy as a humanitarian.

Where is he now?

After retiring from professional boxing in 2021, Pacquiao has remained active in various fields. He continues to train and participates in exhibitions, most recently a fight in 2023.

Beyond the ring, he has pursued business ventures, including owning a basketball team, and remains a global ambassador for sports and peace.

Legacy in boxing

Pacquiao’s impact on boxing is immeasurable. With a record of 62 wins, 8 losses, and 2 draws, he is not only a champion but a beloved figure worldwide.

His story of rising from poverty to global stardom serves as an inspiration to millions.

As we celebrate Manny Pacquiao's birthday, his legacy as a boxer, philanthropist, and statesman reminds us that greatness isn’t confined to the ring—it’s about the impact you leave behind.
