Ryan Garcia vs. Vergil Ortiz Jr.? Oscar De La Hoya feels 'they're going to meet'DAZN
Could we see this fight eventually happen?
Ryan Garcia and Vergil Ortiz Jr. both fight under Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions banner.

Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs) returns from a 15-month layoff on April 9 against Emmanuel Tagoe at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, while Ortiz makes his 2022 debut on March 19 versus Michael McKinson at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. Both guys are near world-title contention in their respective divisions. Is there a chance the lightweight and welterweight phenoms ever square off despite the two-weight class difference? Their promoter feels eventually the two will cross paths inside the ring.

“Yeah, it’s crossed my mind,” De La Hoya told Boxing Scene in regard to pitting Ortiz against Garcia. “But not now. Both guys are on different paths to greatness and to championship status, but at some point, they’re going to meet, and that’s going to be a super mega-fight down the road. I can see that happening within a couple of years. That’s just right around the corner.”

Ortiz (18-0, 18 KOs) has other fish to fry at this particular time but is open to a future clash with his stablemate.

“Me and Ryan have actually talked about this," Ortiz also told Boxing Scene. "If we end up fighting each other one day, or if the opportunity is there, we’ll take the money, fight a good fight, and leave it all in there. It would be cool. That’s all I can really say about it.”
