Julio Cesar Martinez believes that taking over from Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. as the most respected Mexican fighter will be a big motivation for Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s legacy.
Chavez and Canelo shared a love-in at the weekend and Martinez believes that he too can follow in the footsteps of perhaps the two greatest Mexican fights.
“It’s a big motivation for me and it’s apathy that I’d like to follow and aspire to do,” he told the DAZN Boxing Show.
“More than anything we’re with the best promotion, and like always, I’m coming with everything except fear.
“The truth is that for Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, it had to be a motivation for him; it must have been a big enthusiastic moment for him and it’s not so much what people say; it’s more so what you show in the ring.
“It’s a good place to move up.”
Martinez played down the idea that he wanted to emulate the pair to be considered the best pound-for-pound fighter as his main motivation.
“To be perfectly honest, my motivation is all of my people, who have always supported me and been with me, my family, my wife, my kids, to secure their future. Build a solid foundation for my family, my parents. My family, more than anything else. It;s what keeps my motor pushing forward.”
The WBC flyweight champion is next fighting Joel Cordova on June 26 in a fight shown exclusively on DAZN.
