Sebastian Fundora continued on his path to junior middleweight supremacy following a unanimous decision win over Carlos Ocampo on Saturday night to retain his interim WBC title.
After beating Erickson Lubin in an entertaining contest last April, Fundora looked to produce something similar against Ocampo.
Fundora utilized his six-foot-six-inch frame in the early rounds and threw over 170 jabs in the first three rounds. This did not deter Ocampo, who went toe-to-toe with the American and also found some success with hooks to Fundora's body and head.
Round four saw Fundora apply more pressure on his opponent. While Ocampo was able to stay on his feet, there were times when he looked weary and could have been stopped.
As the fight entered the championship rounds, Fundora focused on his jab once more, and this saw him breeze to a comfortable win in the eyes of the three ringside judges who scored the fight 119-109, 118-110, and 117-111 in Fundora's favor.
Speaking after the fight, Fundora was pleased with his performance and believed his preparation was key when it came to sharing the ring with a durable Ocampo.
“I thought I would show a little boxing and put that on display, but you know I still had to bang for the fans," said Fundora.
"That’s what they came here for, so I had to give it to them. I felt my jab was solid and the difference and had him backing up. You know I like to break my opponent down, and he was very tough.
"I am pleased with this performance because I did what we trained for. I trained for boxing, and I trained to stay at a distance, and I think we did that in the fight.”
