We asked DAZN's Sergio Mora for his three predictions for boxing in 2023 and here's what he said:
1. An undisputed heavyweight champion of the world will be crowned in 2023
Oleksandr Usyk-Tyson Fury — It’s probably not the most aesthetically eye-pleasing fight that we’ll get but at least we’ll get an undisputed champion. With Usyk being a brilliant boxer southpaw, with Fury being a brilliant boxer, such a big giant, I don’t think that fight will be a typical heavyweight fight. I think it will be like two cruiserweights with athleticism fighting. But at least we will get an undisputed champion. That fight I want to see just for all the belts — everything on the line. We will have one heavyweight champion in boxing.
2. Fans finally get Errol Spence Jr vs. Terence Crawford
It has dragged on for so long. These guys are both in their 30s. There’s so much politicking. Crawford-Spence — everyone still wants to see this fight. It’s still a mega fight but it’s not as salivating as it was maybe last year, two years ago, certainly not three years ago. It got to the point to where’s it’s like Mayweather-Pacquiao, when they fought. We’re probably going to get the same outcome where you’ll see one guy wasn’t what he was two or three years before. I don’t know who it will be, whether it’s Spence or Crawford. Spence has been through a lot physically. Crawford has been getting hit more in his last couple of fights and he’s not as laser sharp as he normally is but he is still a pound-for-pound talent.
3. Canelo Alvarez will rematch Dmitry Bivol
That’s just a fight that Canelo is too stubborn to let this fight get pushed to the backburner. He’ll come back and do a tune-up to test out his hand that he had surgery on and get some of the cobwebs off. I’m pretty sure he’ll fight a John Ryder. He always said he wants to fight in England. And then he’ll prepare for the Canelo-Bivol rematch stubbornly even though it's probably not the best fight for him. But that’s Canelo for you.
