Steve Collins had some memorable battles.

Steve Collins was one of the most entertaining boxers of the 1990s as he captured world title success to send his Irish fans into a frenzy.

The Dublin fighter spent a large portion of his career fighting in America, but after basing himself in Britain and Ireland for the latter stages of his career, Collins enjoyed many big nights.

After winning the WBO middleweight title in 1994, Collins jumped up in weight and became the first man to defeat Chris Eubank in a thrilling two-fight series.

Collins would follow that up with two victories over Nigel Benn, but does he identify any the British men he faced as the best boxer he ever come across?

“The best boxer was definitely Mike McCallum. He was in his prime at 33 years old and I was 26 and still learning,” said Collins when speaking to The Ring

“Mike had beaten some of the very best fighters in the world at that point and guys like Sugar Ray Leonard wouldn’t go anywhere near him because he was so slick. I learned more in one fight with Mike McCallum than I did in my five previous fights combined, do you understand?

“He was skilful, a master at combination punching and he had everything at his disposal. He was the smartest guy I ever fought.”
