Jaime Munguia’s impressive unbeaten record is still intact as he battered John Ryder before stopping the British fighter in nine rounds.
Munguia has long claimed that he’s worthy of world title glory at 168lbs, and he enhanced those beliefs with victory over Ryder.
With super-middleweight providing numerous fighters with big opportunities, DAZN looks at who could be next for the hard-hitting Mexican.
Canelo Alvarez
The obvious answer and the man all fighters at 168lbs want to test themselves against is Canelo Alvarez. The ruler at super-middleweight, Canelo spent 2023 beating up John Ryder and Jermell Charlo, and his next move is still unconfirmed.
Speculated to face Jermall Charlo at some point in 2024, a Jaime Munguia vs. Canelo Alvarez fight may have to wait, but if Munguia keeps impressing like he did against Ryder, the public demand for an all-Mexican clash will only increase.
David Benavidez
Another super-middleweight impressing audiences is David Benavidez and Munguia will be fully aware of the progress being made by the Arizona man. Benavidez is another fighter actively pursuing a showdown with Canelo but if that fight can’t be made, him vs. Munguia is a suitable alternative.
Like Munguia, Benavidez also brings an unbeaten record to the table, and him against Munguia, both putting it all on the line, would surely do big business with the victor in an ideal position to demand a contest with Canelo Alvarez.
Gennadiy Golovkin
Could the form of Jaime Munguia be catching the eye of Gennadiy Golovkin? The Kazakh monster hasn’t fought since losing to Canelo Alvarez in 2022, but with 168lbs littered with a number of lucrative opportunities, could Golovkin be tempted to have one more fight?
There’s no doubt that he’s seen better days but the high level Golovkin operated at for so many years may give him the confidence that he has one last great performance in him.
Although not the main target of Munguia, it’s a fight that would create great interest and an impressive performance could grab the attention of Canelo.
