Sunny Edwards fights this weekend and I’m looking forward to being there as he defends his IBF world flyweight title against Andres Campos.
Anyone who has followed Edwards’ career for a long period will be fully aware of how skilful and sound he is in the ring, but for me, this is the period of his career where he must do it in the biggest fights against the best opponents.
Believe me when I say this, Sunny is ready for anyone in the lower weight categories and when you’re blessed with the natural talent that he has, it’s no surprise that he backs himself the way he does.
His confidence is one of his greatest assets, but he only has that confidence because he’s knows full well what he’s capable of and he never cuts a single corner with Grant Smith pushing him hard.
Usually in boxing, the lower weight classes have often been ignored but that’s all changed in recent years thanks to fighters like Naoya Inoue and Roman Gonzalez, and now Edwards has the chance to put more eyes on himself.
Campos is coming from Chile with a point to prove and he has the opportunity to become world champion but he’s going to be coming up against a very special fighter.
Edwards has been class for a very long time, and I expect him to enhance his credential on Saturday night with a dominant points win over Campos. This will be the fourth defence of his world title and I’m hoping that the fifth one will be a superb unification fight with the equally excellent Bam Rodriguez.
This is the type of fight that Edwards once so he can finally prove himself as the world’s best flyweight and I think it has all the right ingredients to deliver.
I’m hopeful that Bam can be in the DAZN studio with myself on Saturday night to watch Sunny up close and if he likes what he sees, maybe the next time they share an arena will be to decide who’s the best fighter at 112lbs.
