One of the bigger storylines coming into Saturday's heavyweight title rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua was whether Tyson Fury would come out of retirement yet again and challenge the winner.
After Usyk beat Joshua by split decision to retain the IBF, WBA (super), and WBO heavyweight titles, it didn't take long for the WBC titlist to chime in on social media and seemingly come out of retirement and challenge Usyk for all the marbles.
"I will annihilate both of them on the same night," Fury said in the video. "Get your f---ing checkbook out because 'The Gypsy King' is here to stay forever!"
Fury retired after beating Dillian Whyte in April despite him not relinquishing the WBC or Ring titles. Then last month, Fury declared he was back and wanted to battle former Englishman Derek Chisora in a trilogy bout. Not many took that seriously.
Fury then announced he was retiring for the second time in less than four months and vacated the Ring belt. The WBC gave him a deadline of Saturday, Aug. 26, to let them know in writing if he would never return. Now that doesn't appear to be the case. Fury not fighting again was something Usyk didn't believe anyway.
"I'm sure that Tyson Fury is not retired yet," Usyk said in his post-fight interview after defeating Joshua. "I'm sure. I'm convinced he wants to fight me. I want to fight him. And if I'm not fighting Tyson Fury, I'm not fighting at all."
