Vergil Ortiz is complimentary about welterweight rival: 'I can't take nothing away from him'DAZN

Vergil Ortiz is anticipating the hardest fight of his career when he tackles the threat of Eimantas Stanionis next year.

Oscar De La Hoya, the man guiding Ortiz’s career, recently won a purse bid to stage the bout and it appears that the Texan will be next in line when he looks to relieve Stanionis of his WBA welterweight title.

Both men have delivered brilliantly as professionals and the victor of their contest is surely the man to put pressure on either Terence Crawford or Errol Spence at the top of the division.

Ortiz is ready for the bout, and after it was made official regarding his promoter’s winning offer, the unbeaten star was quick to heap praise on the Lithuanian.

“I think he’ll be my toughest opponent to date,” said Ortiz when speaking to Fight Hype.

“I feel he’s really smart with his defence. He’s really strong and really tight, if that makes sense, with his punches and stuff.

“Without hyping him up too much. I think he’s a good fighter. I honestly can’t take nothing away from him. I don’t think we’re doing it for the sport or for the fans. I think we want to prove ourselves to ourselves and not to anyone else. I think that’s where it matters the most.”
