Former world super lightweight champion Regis Prograis is frustrated when it comes to fighting for a world super lightweight title.

During a recent interview with The DAZN Boxing Show, Prograis claimed he was being overlooked by both the WBA and WBC when it came to contesting their titles at 140lbs after they were vacated by Josh Taylor, who is looking to secure a rematch with British rival Jack Catterall.

Now WBA president Gilberto Mendoza has had his say on the matter.

"He [Regis Prograis] might be right, but as you know we’re trying to reduce titles," Mendoza told The DAZN Boxing Show

"We’re working hard to reduce double championships; I hope by December we will only have four divisions with two titles.

"On Prograis, he might be right commercially, but legally and with eliminators, and decisions we took in the past, unfortunately it was off."

Alberto Puello and Botirzhon Akhmedov are set to go head-to-head for the vacant WBA strap on August 20, and in the eyes of Mendoza, the reason for making this fight was in order to continue solve the problems the sanctioning body had created by having multiple active world title belts.

"And you were saying number six, that ranking was modified, so right now Puello is going to fight Akhmedov who’s number two, he fought twice for eliminators, that was overlooked so we had to correct that.

"He’s fighting for the vacant title that Josh Taylor gave, then we had Barroso when we had multiple champions, Ismael Barroso was the mandatory for Taylor. So Taylor being out, we had to clean up all the mess that was left."

Mendoza also revealed that Prograis was given the chance to stake his claim for a vacant WBA super lightweight title fight.

"We gave him a chance to put forward his case to a panel, this panel made a recommendation to the championship committee and the championship committee made the decision," Mendoza said.

"I hope he gets a chance soon."
