Who is Dmitry Bivol? Background, record, championships, biggest wins of Canelo's next opponentDAZN
Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez returns to action for the first time in 2022, but who is the man he will be facing in the opposite corner?

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez looks to become a two-time light heavyweight world champion when he faces defending WBA champion Dmitry Bivol in Las Vegas on Saturday.

With Bivol not being a household name, many are already tipping Canelo to emerge with the win this weekend. However, Bivol is a huge part of what is an exciting light heavyweight division.

WBC and IBF title holder Artur Beterbiev and Joe Smith Jr. are set to meet in a unification clash later this year. The winner at the T-Mobile Arena could be set for a undisputed title clash.

The reigning champion has established himself as one of the best in the division with eight successful title defences and Canelo will certainly have his work cut out when the pair go head-to-head on May 7.

Championships

Dmitry Bivol's first shot at a world title came on November 4 2017 when he faced Trent Broadhurst for the WBA light heavyweight title and it's safe to say Bivol took this opportunity with both hands.

A first round knockout saw Bivol claim the title and he has held onto the belt ever since, but now this reign as champion is under threat with an upcoming fight against the world's number one pound-for-pound fighter.

Biggest wins

Dmitry Bivol arrived on the world stage following his knockout win over Broadhurst five years ago, but his biggest win came two years later against America's Joe Smith Jr.

Bivol showcased his superior skills in what was a dominant win over Smith Jr., as his footwork and jab put him in complete control against his American foe.

Towards the end of round 12 it looked as if Bivol would end the fight before the final bell with a right hand and left hook counter which rocked Smith Jr. into the corner. Referee Gary Rosato, after communicating with Smith Jr., was on the brink of stopping the fight, but the title challenger was saved by the bell.

Bivol was the clear winner and the three judges' scorecards reflected this with two scoring the bout 119-109 and the third at 118-110.

Now, Smith Jr. is a world champion. This win was a clear sign of Bivol's exceptional talent and why he was a force to be reckoned with at 175lbs.
