Who is Katie Taylor? Background, record, championships, biggest wins of Chantelle Cameron's next opponent

The undisputed women's lightweight champion Katie Taylor is no stranger to a big occasion, but Saturday night will be something different. 

For the first time in her professional career, Taylor fights in her native Ireland when she takes on Chantelle Cameron for the undisputed women's super lightweight title and it's set to be a special night for Irish sport. 

Taylor was originally set for a rematch with Amanda Serrano, but after the Puerto Rican was forced to pullout due to injury, it was Cameron who expressed an interest in facing Taylor and the fight was made almost instantly. 

Already Taylor has achieved so much in the sport, but becoming a two-weight undisputed champion in her home country will rank as one of, if not the biggest moment of her career inside the ring.

Championships

Katie Taylor has become a two-weight champion during her time as a professional boxer. 

She first achieved world title success in 2017 when she beat Anahi Ester Sanchez to claim the vacant WBA women's lightweight title and since then has gone onto win the other three titles at 135lbs. 

Taylor also became the WBO women's super lightweight in 2019 when she overcame Christina Linardatou on points. 

Biggest wins

Katie Taylor wins first world title; October 28, 2017

On the undercard of Anthony Joshua vs. Carlos Takam, Katie Taylor bid to win her first world title when she faced Anahi Ester Sanchez in Cardiff for the vacant WBA women's lightweight title. 

Taylor produced a dominant performance hurting her opponent in rounds two and three. Sanchez managed to find some success in the fifth, but Taylor was able to regain control and was awarded the victory with all three judges scoring the fight 99-90 in her favour after 10 rounds.

Fighting on another Anthony Joshua undercard, Katie Taylor bid for undisputed women's lightweight glory when she faced Belgium's Delfine Persoon. 

What followed was a contest fit for the historic Madison Square Garden with Persoon applying constant pressure from the opening bell and forcing Taylor onto the back foot.

While Taylor was looking to showcase her boxing skills, she found this difficult with Persoon applying rough tactics in the clinch. This made for a thrilling fight with both women cancelling each other out whenever an opportunity seemed to have presented itself. 

The fight went the distance and it was Taylor who was awarded the win via majority decision with two judges scoring the fight 96-94 and the other declaring the contest a 95-95 draw. 

The pair would meet in an entertaining rematch one year later. 

Katie Taylor becomes a two-weight champion; November 2, 2019

After becoming the undisputed women's lightweight champion against Delfine Persoon, Katie Taylor decided to move up in weight to face the WBO women's super lightweight champion Christina Linardatou. 

Linardatou came out on the front foot, but from round two, Taylor found her rythm and gained control of the contest. 

There was a scare in round eight when a right hand from Linardatou rocked Taylor who then opted to revert back to her boxing skills instead of opting for an all guns blazing approach.

This proved to be the right decision with Taylor being declared the winner by unanimous decision with scores of 97-93, 97-93 and 96-94. 

Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano make history in all-time classic; April 30, 2022

Katie Taylor's undisputed lightweight title defence against Amanda Serrano was a historic occasion. 

This was the first women's fight to headline a boxing event at the iconic Madison Square Garden and it lived up to expectations. 

Very little separated the two fighters, and it looked like Serrano was on course for victory after hurting Taylor in round five. But the defending champion was able to rally and played a part in a final round which had fans on the edge of their seats. 

Taylor managed to secure the victory via a split decision with two judges scoring the fight 97-93 and 96-93 in her favour, while the other scored the fight 96-94 to Serrano.
