Two years ago, boxer Kim Clavel decided to pause her career in the ring and help her community.

With the coronavirus pandemic at its peak and hospitals on the verge of collapse, the athlete decided to dust off her nursing supplies and help out at a hospital in her native Montreal, Canada.

Now, 28 months later, she has returned to the sport in a big way after she was crowned WBC world light flyweight champion last Friday by beating Mexico's Yesenia Gomez in front of a home crowd at the Montreal Casino.

Winning via a unanimous decision (100-90, 99-91 and 99-91), Clavel not only maintained her unbeaten record (16-0, 3 KOs) but also achieved her dream.

"This is the beginning of a beautiful story. I'm proud of us, of my team, because this didn't happen alone," Clavel said.

"I like to go up the stairs, I don't like to go the elevator. I want to live my moment. I want to be on my cloud. It's my first championship."

Kim started her boxing career as a hobby while still working as a nurse, until one day - on her 29th birthday - she decided to take a sabbatical and try her luck as a professional fighter, and following Friday's win, this gamble at the Montreal Casino paid off.
