Bio

Costello grew up in Camberwell, London after his parents moved over from Spiddal in Galway, Ireland. He took a job in the BBC accounts department aged 16 and after looking for other opportunities within the company, ended up as a runner for BBC World Service.

With his boxing and coaching at Lynn AC came a desire to enter the company’s sports realm, and Costello would eventually take voice lessons and made his commentary debut at the 1995 World Championships.

Five years later, he made his Olympics broadcasting debut in Sydney and a career highlight came when his voice was a big part of the Games arriving in London in 2012.

A quirk of fate in 2002 led to his big break on Radio 5 Live, as established 5 Live commentator John Rawling lost his voice. Costello stepped in and never looked back.
