Will a fight between Ryan Garcia and Gervonta 'Tank' Davis come to fruition?
Following 'Tank' Davis' win in early January over Hector Luis Garcia, many expected an announcement to be imminent in regards to a fight with Ryan Garcia, but nothing has been formalised.
With April 15 being touted as a potential date, a confirmation of the contest would need to be made soon in order for both fighters to being their preparations.
When discussing the long wait on JABS, Chris Mannix believes regardless of he faces, Garcia must reiterate that he needs to fight on April 15.
"If I’m Ryan Garcia, I want it in writing that I’m going to fight on April 15, that’s number one," Mannix stated.
"Number two, if I’m Garcia, I want to have a backup plan in place, not just because this fight might not happen on April 15 because of scheduling issues, but because ‘Tank’ Davis still faces a significant trial in the D.C. area over a hit and run.
"We saw just last year a judge rejected a plea deal because there was no jail time involved so it’s not crazy to think that it’s at least possible for Gervonta Davis to be serving some form of sentence between February and March which would make it highly unlikely that we see a Garcia vs. Davis fight in April.
"So if I’m Garcia, I’m telling Golden Boy, I’m telling DAZN, have somebody on standby, I’m fighting on April 15 either against Tank Davis or somebody else."
DAZN boxing analyst Sergio Mora agreed with Mannix's thoughts and even suggested an alternative opponent to replace 'Tank' Davis.
"You can bet that they are going to have someone on standby, that’s what savvy promoters do," Mora said.
"They are not going to let that date slip away and there going to have someone that’s similar to the style of ‘Tank’ and I’ve said it plenty of times, another short aggressive southpaw Mercito Gesta, it makes perfect sense.
"So have Gesta on standby."
