World Boxing Super Series to make its return featuring women's tournament

Past winners of The World Boxing Super Series have included former undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, current undisputed junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor, and unified bantamweight titlist Naoya Inoue. 

Now, the tournament is going to be changing its format. WBSS will stage a Season 3, which will feature the 130-pound women's division. The plan is to open the season with the quarterfinals starting in September. No fighters have been signed for the tournament. The Athletic was the first to report the news. 

"It's fantastic the opportunity is being given to women for a sport that's so hotly developed, especially during lockdown," Kalle Sauerland told The Athletic. "There's been some real bangers with the women. We'll be opening the doors to all the promoters in the world."

The marquee name that could be in the field is the undisputed lightweight champion, Katie Taylor. After that, you have Natasha Jonas, who gave Taylor a run for her money in her losing a close decision in May; Delfine Persoon, who lost two narrow decisions to Taylor and 130-pound champions, Mikaela Mayer and Terri Harper.

Among the names that move up in weight could be unified women's featherweight champion Amanda Serrano and fellow 126-pound belt holder Erika Cruz Hernandez.
