The NFL Draft is almost among us and while the spotlight is firmly on the much-heralded quarterback and wide receiver classes, the 2024 crop also features a wealth of talent at offensive tackle.
Don’t be surprised if there is an early run on tackles, as a number of teams picking early have a need there.
Here is a closer look at former Oregon State star Taliese Fuaga, who is expected to be off the board early doors.
Background and college career
Born in Tacoma, Washington, Fuaga attended Mount Tahoma High School, playing on both the offensive and defensive lines. He would play his college football at Oregon State University, emerging as a starter in his third year in 2023 and was named a first-team All-American last season.
What sort of player is he?
At 6ft 6in and 324lbs, Fuaga passes the eye test for a tackle and is a devastating run blocker. He combines this with quick feet that he utilises well in pass protection. Away from his physical attributes he has excellent awareness of what his opponents are planning to do, plus a feisty attitude that you want from a player in the trenches. This should all see him go in the top ten when the draft gets underway.
Where is he likely to be drafted?
Offensive tackles are always in demand during the draft and you can make a case for the likes of the LA Chargers, Tennessee Titans, Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos all drafting an offensive tackle in the first half of the first round. However, the New Orleans Saints are in dire need of a tackle, given Ryan Ramczk’s injury woes and the poor return from 2022 first-round selection Trevor Penning. Don’t be surprised if the Saints look to move up from their number 14 selection to grab him.
When is the 2024 NFL Draft?
The draft takes place over three days.
- Round 1: Thursday, April 25 (8 p.m. ET / 1 a.m. BST)
- Rounds 2-3: Friday, April 26 (7 p.m. ET / 12 a.m. BST)
- Rounds 4-7: Saturday, April 27 (12 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. BST)
