Former NFL Offensive Rookie of The Year and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III has offered some controversial advice to rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.
Williams is the hot favourite to be the first-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Those odds shortened when the Chicago Bears traded quarterback Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
At the combine, Williams told reporters that being the first pick would be a dream.
But Griffin views the situation differently. The former second-overall pick said, "Caleb Williams should pull an Eli Manning and demand that the Chicago Bears do not draft him."
Griffin is referring to the 2004 NFL Draft, where Eli Manning and his advisors told the San Diego Chargers not to pick him with the first overall pick.
Griffin explained, "After everything that happened with Justin Fields, can Caleb Williams say with certainty that the Bears is the right place for him?
"Caleb Williams has said that he wants to be legendary, that he wants to rewrite history. Is that going to happen in Chicago? The Bears drafted Fields with the 11th-overall pick and turned him into a sixth-round pick."
Furthermore, Griffin added more pressure on Chicago's head coach and general manager, saying, "GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus are in a lame-duck season. They have to win this year, or they're gone."
The 34-year-old Griffin also stated which team he would like Williams to join: "Yes, I do think Caleb going to Washington would work. He's a DC kid from Washington. Washington is the best spot for him."
