After opening the season with a victory, the Los Angeles Chargers have lost three straight games and head into Week 5 shorthanded.
The Chargers will be without running back Austin Ekeler, who has been a key cog in the team's offence this season. It's a big blow to a team that has struggled to put up points this season — the Chargers average just over 20 points per game through four weeks of play, and that number has been bolstered by the 31 points they scored in a Week 4 loss to Tom Brady and the Buccaneers.
Awaiting them in Week 5's Monday nighter is another legendary quarterback, as Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints will play host to the Chargers at the SuperDome. Unlike their visitors, the Saints have had no problem creating offence as they've averaged more than 30 points a game so far this season.
Much of that is down to options Brees has at hand. Running backs Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray have been dominant as expected, while the receiving corps (of which Kamara is included) has been dependable when called upon. Wide receiver Michael Thomas will miss the game, though, after a reported altercation with a teammate.
The Saints' multipronged offence will definitely be a problem for the visitors, but the Chargers can compete if they can limit the damage while also figuring out who takes on Ekeler's responsibilities.
