The Kansas City Chiefs overcame a record-setting performance from Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts to win Super Bowl LVII on Sunday in Arizona.
Hurts was an offensive force throughout the game, setting a new Super Bowl mark with three rushing touchdowns. The 24-year-old also racked up 304 passing yards and a touchdown pass, along with a successful two-point conversion to tie the game late, but it wasn't enough as the Chiefs scored on every possession in the second half to undo a 10-point halftime deficit and end the night as champions.
Led by superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs were a different team in the second half after looking rattled in the opening two quarters. That included an injury scare for Mahomes, who appeared to aggravate an existing ailment in his right ankle near the end of the first half.
Mahomes was good to go in the second half though, and scrambled for a 14-yard gain early in the third quarter to show that he had not lost his trademark mobility. Along with receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Kadarius Toney, Mahomes was able to engineer first down after first down in the second half, putting the feared Eagles defense to the sword with 24 points over the final 30 minutes.
However, Hurts was able to give hope to the Eagles with a fourth-quarter touchdown run and the aforementioned two-point conversion that tied the game up with 5:15 remaining. Unfortunately for Philadelphia, the Chiefs then proceeded to work the clock in expert fashion, putting together a 62-yard drive that burned 5:07 before the game-winning field goal was kicked.
With just eight seconds to work with, the Eagles had no choice other than to go for the Hail Mary from their own 36-yard line. The play failed rather predictably, and Kansas City claimed a second Vince Lombardi Trophy in four years.
