The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for their fifth Super Bowl in six seasons after defeating the Buffalo Bills in Sunday’s AFC Championship game.

The 32-29 win at Arrowhead Stadium means that the Chiefs have the opportunity of an unprecedented ‘three-peat’ when they take on the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans on February 9.

The Chiefs’ current run is one of the most impressive in NFL history and defensive tackle Chris Jones, who will be one of several Kansas City players gunning for a fourth Super Bowl ring next month, believes these glory days will continue as long as one man remains with the franchise.

While quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid are often credited as the team’s most important figures, Jones has hailed defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo as a cornerstone of their current success.

“As long as they continue to let Spags be our defensive coordinator and not hire him as a head coach, we’re going to continue to win,” Jones said on ESPN.

“For me, he’s one of the greatest assistant coaches to ever coach the game. You look at his resume, he’s got one of the greatest resumes. He finds a way to close. That’s what Spags does.”

Spagnuolo joined the Chiefs as defensive coordinator in 2019, the latest stop on a 40-year coaching career which has included stints in the college game, NFL Europe and two years as the St Louis Rams' head coach between 2009 and 2011.

Despite Spagnuolo’s success with Kansas City, he was not heavily linked with vacant head coach positions this offseason and with just the New Orleans Saints job left to be filled, it would appear he is set to remain with the Chiefs - which is bad news for the rest of the NFL.
