The final NFL head coach vacancy is set to be filled, with the Washington Commanders reportedly hiring Dan Quinn as their new boss.
Quinn will make the move from Commanders NFC East rivals Dallas Cowboys, where he has just completed a second season as their defensive coordinator, according to NFL Network.
The Commanders cleared the decks at the end of the regular season, parting company with Ron Rivera after a 4-13 finish left them bottom of the NFC East, in a move that was widely expected following Josh Harris’ $6billion purchase of the club last summer.
Former Carolina Panthers head coach Rivera spent four seasons with Washington, but oversaw the worst defense in the NFL last season and departed with questions at the quarterback position after Sam Howell underwhelmed in his second year in the league.
Quinn will have the number two overall draft pick at his disposal with several strong quarterbacks available in this year’s draft.
This will be Quinn’s second head coaching job in the NFL, following a spell with the Atlanta Falcons which saw his side suffer a crushing defeat to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI after leading 28-3 in the third quarter. He was fired five games into his sixth season in Georgia in 2020.
Quinn’s upcoming hire will mean all head coach vacancies in the NFL will be filled, following the Seattle Seahawks’ hire of Mike Macdonald from the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday evening.
The move also means that no teams have hired Bill Belichick following the six-time Super Bowl winner’s exit from the New England Patriots following their 4-13 season.
