Teams were busy on the trade deadline this year.

The start of the 2023 NFL season feels like a lifetime ago already.

Through the first eight weeks of the season there have been plenty of players on the move finding new homes.

DAZN takes a look at five of the best trades this season.

49ers acquire Chase Young

Perhaps the highlight trade of deadline day was San Francisco's move for Chase Young.

Back in 2020 the Washington Commanders used the second overall pick to select the defensive end who now joins an already formidable defense.

Young joins a frightening pass-rushing unit which already includes Nick Bosa and Randy Gregory.

The 24-year-old has five sacks in his last seven games as he looks to return to the form he showed when being named Defensive Rookie of the Year.

In return, the 49ers sent the Commanders a 2024 third-round pick - what a bargain that could prove to be.

Commanders get second round pick for Sweat

The Commanders defense was the focus of the trade deadline day, with Montez Sweat leaving the franchise as well as Chase Young.

The 2019 late first round pick has found a new home with the Chicago Bears, whose defense will certainly be improved by Sweat's arrival.

However, it is Washington who on paper come out the better following this trade, as the Bears have given up their 2024 second round pick for the defensive end.

And with Chicago currenlty 2-6 on the season, that second round pick could be at the very start of the round - only a few later than the 26th overall pick that the Commanders used to select Sweat four years ago.

Sweat has 6.5 sacks in 2023 through eight games, making 32 combined tackles in that stretch, and the Bears could certainly do with the upgrade on defense.

Dobbs leaves the desert for Minnesota

After starting quarterback Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles last weekend, the Minnesota Vikings were left with very few options.

Rookie quarterback Jaren Hall will get his first career start against the Atlanta Falcons this weekend, but the Vikings traded for Arizona Cardinals QB Joshua Dobbs.

This season has been the first time the 28-year-old has been a consistent starter, but in Cousins' absense he provides some much needed depth.

Despite going 1-7 with the Cardinals so far in 2023, Dobbs completed 62.8% during his short spell in Arizona - throwing eight touchdowns and five interceptions along the way.

The trade also comes at little cost for the Vikings, who send Arizona their 2024 sixth round pick for Dobbs and the Cardinals' 2024 seventh round selection.

Jefferson gets another chance in Atlanta

The Atlanta Falcons acquired former Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Van Jefferson to add another weapon for Desmond Ridder to target.

Jefferson, a former second round pick, has had a mixed career to date in the NFL - his best season coming back in 2021 where he caught 50 passes for 802 yards and six touchdowns.

So far in 2023, Jefferson has been a non-factor for the Rams after the emergence of Puka Nacua, and as a result has just eight catches for a little over 100 yards.

Despite Jefferson's lack of form, Atlanta are still acquiring a known-NFL talent at wide receiver and paying very little to do so.

Atlanta receive Jefferson and the Rams' 2025 seventh round pick in exchange for their 2025 sixth round pick.

Eagles fill major defensive gap with Byard

Without doubt one of the best trades of this season was the Philadelphia Eagles' trade for safety Kevin Byard.

The Eagles are once again Super Bowl contenders, but after losing both their starting safeties at the end of last season it had been a position of weakness in 2023.

But in former Tennessee Titans safety Byard, the Eagles now have one of the NFL's very best players at the position.

It has come at a cost, as the Eagles have sent their 2024 fifth and sixth round picks to the Titans as well as fellow safety Terrell Edmunds.

And while on the subject of Byard, it would be rude not to recall this play in which he set the NFL record for longest thrown touchdown by a defensive player in the Super Bowl era.
