The Cleveland Browns have moved to revise the contract of four-time Pro Bowler Nick Chubbs following the running back’s latest knee injury.
Chubb suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 2 of the 2023 season, tearing his anterior cruciate ligament. He has undergone surgery twice on the injury and with a lengthy previous injury history, there are fears he may not be able to return to the previous levels he has shown in his career.
His reworked contract has seen Chubb and the Browns agree to lower his base salary of $11.75million and give him the chance to earn it back via incentives, as per the NFL Network.
The 28-year-old rushed for 6,511 yards and 48 touchdowns during his six-season career so far, with the Browns struggling to effectively replace him last season, as their rushing attack fell out of the NFL’s top ten for the first time since 2019.
Updates on Chubb’s recovery have been thin on the ground, amid speculation that Chubb could become a salary cap casualty this offseason. This compromise means that Chubb has the chance to work his way back into the Browns line-up, while the team are offered financial protection.
