Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay confirmed on Wednesday that quarterback Anthony Richardson will undergo shoulder surgery.

The procedure and subsequent recovery will end the rookie's season.

Richardson sustained the injury on his right shoulder during a Week 5 game against the Titans. The 21-year-old was placed on injured reserve while the team's medical staff could properly assess the injury and determine the best course of action.

"After consultation with our medical staff, Anthony, and those close to him, it has been determined that he will undergo surgery to repair his injured shoulder, which will end his season," Irsay wrote on X.

"Anthony is a competitor, and we know how difficult and disappointing this is for him and our team.

"We collected several medical opinions and we felt this was the best course of action for his long-term health.

"We anticipate a full recovery and there is no doubt Anthony has a promising future.

"In the meantime, I love the fight of this team and I'm excited for the opportunity we have ahead of us. It starts this week with Cleveland."

Selected fourth overall at the 2023 NFL Draft, Richardson quickly showed why the Colts rated him so highly, using his mobility and athleticism to drive his team towards the end zone.

Richardson was expected to challenge for Rookie of the Year honours at the end of the campaign, but will instead focus on recovery and getting himself ready for the 2024 season.
