Reigning Super Bowl champions the Kansas City Chiefs were defeated by the New Orleans Saints in their first preseason game of 2023.
The Saints dominated the early stages of the game, with new quarterback Derek Carr and Jamies Winston both scoring touchdowns on their opening drives.
A Will Lutz field goal put the Saints 17-0 up before the AFC West side began their fight back.
Richie James' touchdown got the Chiefs rolling just before half time, and two third-quarter scores from Justyn Ross and Kekoa Crawford put Kansas City ahead for the first time.
Harrison Butker's field goal put them seven points clear in the final quarter, and when the Saints scored a touchdown through Ellis Merriweather with 1:20 left on the clock they opted to go for the two point conversion.
However the Saints failed to covert, and with time ticking away the Chiefs looked set to win the game 24-23.
That was until sophomore quarterback Chris Oladokun threw a interception on third down to turn the ball over to the Saints in field goal range.
Rookie kicker Blake Grupe was handed the responsability of winning the game for the hosts and he made no mistakes, as Oladokun's error proved costly.
The Chiefs face Arizona Cardinals in their next preseason game while the Saints travel to Los Angeles to take on the Chargers.
