The Chargers have a premium draft pick that could be up for grabs.

With less than a week to go until the first round of the NFL Draft, the clock is ticking for any franchises looking to tempt teams into trading their premium draft picks.

The LA Chargers sit at number five in the first round and in a year that features several highly-rated quarterback prospects, there is speculation that plenty of teams could be looking to trade up into the top five.

The Chargers already have a franchise quarterback in place in the shape of Justin Herbert, further strengthening their negotiation power - something general manager Joe Hortiz is well aware of.

The issue of a potential trade came up in a pre-draft press conference on Thursday, with Hortiz warning any teams that are interested in his number five pick will need to submit a big offer.

"There's certainly, 'It's too good of a deal,' because of what you're getting back,” he told the media. “They have to make it attractive for us to move away from those players.

“The whole, 'It's a fair trade, it's a wash,' I don't think that's a trade that we're interested in. If we're going to trade away from great players, there has to be a reason, in terms of value, for us.

“Certainly, there are going to be more great players in the draft, but it has to make sense to you and it has to make sense to the team that is wanting to come up."

The Chargers, who have a new head coach in Jim Harbaugh, also know that if there is a run on quarterbacks in the first four picks, the team could have the pick of non-QBs if they stay where they are.

"We believe we have the first pick in the draft,” Hortiz added. “I know there are going to be four picks that go before us, but we believe that. If four quarterbacks go, we believe, strongly, that we have the first pick in the draft.

"What are teams willing to give us? Obviously, we know it's the fifth pick and people are going to be trading on that scope. It's got to be good value for us. Does it have to be 'blown away?' What is 'blown away?' I don't know the answer to that."
