Super Bowl LVIII is almost among us and while that means one NFL team will be crowned world champions and lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy, it also means the cottage industry around the big game is ready to spring into action.
The much-heralded Super Bowl commercial is a tradition in its own right, with some of the planet’s biggest stars turning out for the globe’s biggest companies to sell their wares in adverts that cost an eye-watering amount.
Last year saw Super Bowl commercial slots sell for $7million for a 30-second ad, meaning firms will want to get the biggest bang for their buck.
And when it comes to global superstars, they don’t come much bigger than Lionel Messi, who will be making a Super Bowl debut this year.
The Argentinian World Cup winner and eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is now a familiar face to American viewers since he moved to MLS side Inter Miami last July.
He will now gatecrash the NFL’s showpiece game next month when he appears in a 60-second advert for Michelob Ultra, with a teaser trailer being released on Thursday, showing him walking up to a bar on a beach and ordering a beer. Going by last year’s rates, the one-minute advert could cost as much as $14million.
Messi fans will need to wait until the big day on February 11 to see the advert in full. Last year’s Michelob Ultra advert featured a host of sports stars including Serena Williams, Tony Romo, Jimmy Butler, Rickie Fowler, Alex Morgan and Canelo Alvarez, but they will hope that Messi’s star power will eclipse all of them this year
