It’s a whole new era for the Chargers, as Jim Harbaugh takes over a team that has massively underachieved in recent seasons, including last year’s 5-12 finish.
With a top-five pick and a franchise quarterback already in place, it promises to be an interesting draft for the Bolts.
Here’s what to look out for in the Chargers’ draft this week.
Los Angeles Chargers draft picks
- No. 5 overall (first round)
- No. 37 overall (second round)
- No. 69 overall (third round)
- No. 105 overall (fourth round)
- No. 110 overall (fourth round) (from Chicago)
- No. 140 overall (fifth round)
- No. 181 overall (sixth round)
- No. 225 overall (seventh round)
- No. 253 overall (seventh round) (compensatory)
Key Needs
Wide receiver is the biggest need after Keenan Allen and Mike Williams’ exits this offseason. Harbaugh’s desire for a powerful running game means bodies are needed up front, while a running back could be a wise late pick.
On defense, tackle and cornerback look to be the biggest needs.
Predictions
It would be a surprise if the Chargers don’t field any calls from teams wanting to trade into their number five slot, giving them a decision to make.
While we’re all expecting quarterbacks to go in the first three picks, will teams still be reaching for QBs, come the fifth pick? Or will the Chargers hang fire and potentially have the choice between Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers and Rome Odunze to fix their hole at wide receiver?
Should LA trade back, they will have plenty of chances to fill their need on the offensive line, as they could target the likes of Joe Alt, Taliese Fuaga Olumuyima Fashanu or Troy Fautanu.
With this being a bumper year for receivers and offensive linemen, the Chargers are well-placed to address their needs.
