There's something wrong with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Coming off two straight Super Bowl appearances and boasting the league's star-in-waiting in Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs were expected to once again storm their way through the AFC en route to another place in the championship game this season. And while there's still time for that scenario to play out, the first seven games of the season don't show any indications that the team is headed in that direction.
Instead, the Chiefs are 3-4 and searching for answers before the campaign truly gets away from them.
One of the big reasons for the Chiefs' early struggles is Mahomes himself, who has looked anything but the dominant force he was over the past several seasons. Tied for the most interceptions in the league, the 26-year-old is accepting his share of the blame.
“You can just watch the tape and know that I need to play better in order to have success,” Mahomes told media earlier this week. “There was plays where guys were open. There was plays where we had matchups downfield that I didn’t hit that I usually would give those guys opportunities to make plays.”
Mahomes and the Chiefs have a chance to get on track on Monday against the New York Giants (2-5), a team that should be nowhere near the level of the Chiefs yet one that sits with just a single win less (with one more game played). With the Giants having easily dispatched Carolina last week, they'll be the ones with the momentum and confidence heading into Monday's matchup.
