Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton says the job done by the coaching staff at Mile High in 2022 "might have been one of the worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFL."
Last season the Broncos had Nathaniel Hackett as head coach before he was let go by the franchise with two games left to play. He has subsequestly joined the New York Jets as offensive coordinator.
There was plenty of hype around the Broncos last offseason, with newly acquired Russell Wilson expected to change their fortunes.
But the experiment failed, and failed badly, as the Broncos won just five games - one after Hackett left - and finished rock bottom of the AFC West.
Speaking to USA Today's Jarrett Bell, Payton said: "Everybody’s got a little stink on their hands, it's not just Russell, they were 29th in the league in pre-snap penalties on both sides of the ball.
"It was a (poor) offensive line and it might have been one of the worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFL. That’s how bad it was.”
Hackett will get a chance of revenge over Payton for his comments when the Jets face the Broncos in week five of the 2023 season.
