NFL training camps across the league will get underway this month and following this year’s quarterback-heavy draft, there are likely to be a number of fascinating QB battles.
A record six quarterbacks were taken in the first round back in April and while the likes of top two selections Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels are likely to be day one starters, others will need to beat out established veterans for the job.
The quarterback situation in New England is especially interesting as the team begins the post-Bill Belichick era, following the six-time Super Bowl champion head coach’s exit at the end of last season. Following him out of the door was last season’s starting quarterback Mac Jones in what has been an offseason of transition.
That meant the team used their third overall draft pick on North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye, while the team also signed nine-year veteran Jacoby Brissett.
New head coach Jerod Mayo got his first look at Maye in action during rookie minicamp in May, with NBCSportsBoston.com reporting that the ‘most likely’ scenario would see Brissett named as the starter following Pats training camp which starts on July 19.
The plan would be to see Brissett starting for most of the season, with rookie Maye being handed the keys to offense around Week 13, letting him bed in and earn some experience so that he can hit the ground running in 2025 after a transitional season.
The Patriots kick off their preseason with a match against the Carolina Panthers on August 9 before clashes against the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders, with their regular season starting with a trip to face the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1.
