NFL Draft 2023: The five best value picks from round one

NFL Draft 2023: The five best value picks from round oneDAZN

There was no surprise that the likes of Bryce Young and CJ Stroud were off the board early in the first round of this year's NFL Draft, but that wasn't the whole story.

As is always the case with any NFL Draft, some teams make sensible and good value to picks to the surprise of fans and experts, and this year was no different.

DAZN takes a look at the five best value picks from the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft below.

  • Pick number: 9
  • Team: Philadelphia Eagles

Georgia's Jalen Carter was originally billed as one of the top defensive prospects in this year's draft, but issues off the field saw him drop down the pecking order.

However, the defensive tackle was still able to become a top 10 pick with his experience and ability to move impressively with a 314lb frame and now the Philadelphia Eagles have added another feared name to their hard-hitting defence.

Christian Gonzalez (CB)

  • Pick number: 17
  • Team: New England Patriots

The New England Patriots under Bill Belichick have always been known to have one of the best defences in the NFL, and this is set to continue with the addition of Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez.

Gonzalez's athleticism was on show for all to see at this year's NFL combine with a 4.38-second 40-yard dash and 41.5 inch vertical jump, and now he joins a franchise which needed some fresh blood in its defence.

With numbers like that in the combine, expect Gonzalez to be a huge part of Belichick's plans in the seasons to come.

Deonte Banks (CB)

  • Pick number: 24
  • Team: New York Giants

With the New York Giants hoping to push on next season following their run to the NFL Wildcard round, they would need to bolster their defence in a division which features the likes of A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and CeeDee Lamb at wide receiver.

With the acquisition of Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks, the Giants have done exactly that with Banks posting a time of 4.35 seconds in the 40-yard dash and a 42 inch vertical jump, his athletic ability should suit the playbook of defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.

Dalton Kincaid (TE)

  • Pick number: 25
  • Team: Buffalo Bills

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has another target in his already stacked arsenal with the arrival of tight end Dalton Kincaid.

With the Bills keen to pick up Kincaid, the team traded up two spots from no.27 to no.25 to acquire the 23-year-old and his numbers back up the hype.

Kincaid scored eight touchdowns in back-to-back seasons for Utah and was part of an offence which went up against USC in last year's thrilling Pac-12 championship game.

Nolan Smith (Edge)

  • Pick number: 30
  • Team: Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles continued to bolster their defence in the first round with the addition of Georgia's Nolan Smith.

Many expected Smith to be within the top 10 picks of this year's draft, however, come the closing stages of round one, Smith was still on the board and it was a no-brainer when the Eagles had the opportunity to pick the 22-year-old.

Smith is a player of many talents and can play in various positions on the Eagles' defensive line, and with the second fastest 40-yard dash time of any edge defender at the NFL Combine since 2003 at 4.39 seconds, Smith is a name Eagles fans can get very excited about.
