NFL Draft 2023: Why do the Miami Dolphins not have a first round pick?

Usually all 32 teams have a chance to make a pick in the first round of the draft, however this year there will only be 31 picks.

This is because the Miami Dolphins forfeited their first round pick due to a bizarre behind-the-scenes scheme planned by owner Stephen Ross.

It transpired that Ross had tapped up legendary quarterback Tom Brady during his time with the Patriots in 2019 and then two years later when the QB was at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

As well as having sights set on bringing to a star QB to South Florida, Ross also tapped up head coach Sean Payton while he was still under contract with the New Orleans Saints.

A number of actions by Brady and Payton then seemed to line up following these initial points of contact with Brady announcing his first retirement in early 2022, while Payton left the Saints in January 2022 shortly after former head coach Brian Flores was fired by the Dolphins.

This led to an investigation being conducted by the NFL, and resulted in Brady playing one final season, while Payton took up a media role during the 2022 season before joining the Denver Broncos.
