The first round of the NFL Draft is less than a month away and most analysts are predicting a quarterback-heavy first round when the action gets underway in Detroit.
This year’s crop of NFL hopefuls features the most promising quarterback class for many years, with the trio of Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels expected to go with the first three picks.
After that, J.J. McCarthy, Michael Penix Jr, Bo Nix and Spencer Rattler are all attracting attention in a year where we could see several first-round trades take place as teams jostle for position.
Here is a look at seven teams that are likely to be eying a new quarterback next month.
Chicago Bears
We’ll start this list with a couple of no-brainers. At a time of year when teams traditionally tend to disguise their intentions, the Bears seem to be making it no secret that they will draft Caleb Williams first overall.
Washington Commanders
Another team that is certain to select a new quarterback. The Commanders sit at number two in the draft and assuming the Bears take Williams, they will face a straight choice between Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels.
New England Patriots
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo did leave the door slightly ajar this week when he spoke about the prospect of trading away his team’s number three selection, but it would be a shock if they turned down the opportunity to land either Maye or Daniels here.
Minnesota Vikings
After seeing Kirk Cousins walk away via free agency this month, the Vikings are in the market for a new signal-caller, despite the signing of Sam Darnold. After trading for another first-round pick, the Vikings have the ammo to move up. Could J.J. McCarthy be their target?
New York Giants
Sitting sixth in the draft, the Giants have been evaluating QBs, with owner John Mara telling reporters at this week’s league meeting that he won’t stand in the way if his staff want to draft a new quarterback. This comes after Daniel Jones signed a big-money extension last year but put in several below-par performances before injury ended his campaign in Week 6.
Denver Broncos
Another candidate to try and move up in the first round, the Broncos have just Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci on their roster following the release of Russell Wilson. With the franchise having to take a huge salary cap hit to get rid of the former Seahawk, finding a cheap rookie option would be a big help in their rebuilding process.
Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders quarterback room consists of second-year Aidan O’Connell and free-agent signing Gardner Minshew. While the former perhaps deserves a chance after some promising signs last year and the latter has always been a decent option wherever he’s played, will the Raiders think they can do better and get a new face in? A long shot, but the draft always throws out a few curveballs.
