The Minnesota Vikings need a miracle if they are going to make the playoffs this season, so it's fitting that the penultimate game of their 2020 campaign falls on Christmas Day.
While not technically eliminated from the postseason, the Vikings (6-8) are facing a near-impossible scenario to secure a playoff berth. Entering Week 16, Minnesota sits sixth in line for one of the four remaining NFC playoff spots while having won just two of its last five games. To have a chance, the Vikes will need to win out while hoping for several of the teams ahead of them to falter.
It's not completely out of the question, but making things even tougher is the fact that Minnesota will be facing the 10-4 New Orleans Saints this week.
The Saints have booked their spot in the playoffs, of course, but still have a lot to play for themselves. After spending much of the year establishing themselves as a Super Bowl contender, the Saints have dropped two straight games and have observers questioning their legitimacy as a true title challenger.
New Orleans will not want to head into the playoffs with those kinds of doubts in place, so dominant showings against the Vikings on Christmas and on Jan. 3 against the Panthers would go a long way to reaffirming Drew Brees and Co. as one of the teams to beat in the playoffs.
For the Vikings, that means facing a Saints team that may just be as motivated to win as they are.
